WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — A man with an outstanding bench warrant in Westmoreland County was arrested after making threats against the Sheriff’s Office.
The office received the information from the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, which originally received the threat. Their investigation led them to Pennsylvania, and they determined the threat was intended for the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsylvania.
A social media post made by Matthew Betts threatened Sheriff Albert and his family. In the post, Betts said he would “do a ancestry dot com so yall get ended.” He also made a threat against the Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement in general. According to police, he referenced the thin blue line and said “wipe them all out.”
During the course of the Sheriff’s Office investigation, it was found that Betts was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant for his arrest.
Members of the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division investigated to find his location. Deputies surrounded a home on Lori Drive in Lower Burrell at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. They made attempts to call Betts out of the house on the PA system, but he would not come out.
Deputies filed a search warrant to enter the home, and it was granted. They entered the home just before 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, where two individuals were immediately taken into custody. Police say both individuals said Betts was not at the home.
Betts was discovered hiding in a storage locker after a thorough search. Items were pushed in front of the locker to conceal it.
Betts was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Westmoreland County Prison on his outstanding warrant, and the Sheriff’s Office says that additional charges will be filed. The other two individuals will be charged at the beginning of the week.
