WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Students at West Mifflin Area High School will start the new semester in their own homes.

The West Mifflin Area School District announced on its Facebook page that students will not return to in-person learning on Jan. 2 due to the extensive clean-up work still required for the fire that broke out in the auditorium earlier this month.

West Mifflin Area School District Superintendent Jeffrey Soles says the fire originated from a lift from an outside contractor that had been plugged in overnight for charging.

The fire, which damaged part of the auditorium’s wall and floor, was quickly “contained and extinguished,” Soles said.

Students will be remote on Jan. 2 and 3, with their return to in-person classes being anticipated for Jan. 6. An update will be provided on Jan. 3.

Clara Barton, Homeville and West Mifflin Area Middle school will operate as scheduled with in-person learning.
