Fire inside in West Mifflin Area High School auditorium damages wall, floor

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Students at West Mifflin Area High School will return to in-person classes Monday.

The West Mifflin Area School District announced on its Facebook page that students will return to in-person learning after it worked closely with the restoration company and subcontractors to assess the safety and readiness of the building after a fire auditorium in December. The fire originated from a lift from an outside contractor that had been plugged in overnight for charging and was quickly contained and extinguished.

In a letter on the district’s Facebook page, West Mifflin Area School District Superintendent Jeffrey Soles said “we are confident that the building is safe for students to return to.”

The letter also said that there is still a faint odor on the second floor. It is being addressed and does not pose a health risk to students or staff.

The band hallway and tech ed. hallway will be off-limits to students until Jan. 13. The auditorium will also be closed off to all students and staff.
