Family looking for answers after couple dies in house fire in Westmoreland County

EAST HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The couple who died in a house fire on Espey Road in Westmoreland County has been identified as Ernest and Nancy Wright. They were both in their 80s.

“They were a good couple. They didn’t bother anybody,” Linda and Tom Goodland told Channel 11.

The Goodlands drove by the Wrights’ home on Monday and saw the aftermath of the fire that killed their neighbors.

“We weren’t what you call ‘good friends,’ but we knew them. They were a nice, quiet couple who kept to themselves,” Linda Goodland said.

The home is located in a rural part of town, approximately 100 yards away from the road. Three days after the fire, small flames were still coming from the home.

For the last few days, fire officials wanted to let the Wrights’ family know about their deaths, but they were having a difficult time finding relatives.

That changed today.

We spoke to Ernest Wright’s son, who had just learned about their death. He told Channel 11 he wants to know how the fire started.

The fire marshal will make that ruling.

Meanwhile, the Goodlands say it’s difficult to lose members of their small community.

“It’s very sad. Very sad for our neighborhood.”
