PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are investigating after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Oakland Wednesday morning.
Officers were called to the intersection of Terrace and Darragh streets on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus just before 5:45 a.m. for someone down on the road.
When they arrived on scene, officers found a 37-year-old woman who appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.
“It’s heartbreaking it’s very sad. Thoughts and prayers go out from the pitt community to them,” a Pitt student told Channel.
“It’s pretty crazy. I’ve heard of these things happening over the past couple years,” he added.
She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in grave condition, where she was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m.
A statement from UPMC sent to employees identified the woman as Jessie Maroney, who was a housekeeper for Pitt.
An initial investigation indicates Maroney was crossing Darragh Street in a crosswalk when the crash happened.
The statement said Maroney in to train and support her co-workers. She was caring, and helpful, reliable and funny. It brought her joy to go camping with her family on the weekends.
Pittsburgh police said the vehicle involved, a white 2019 Freightliner box truck, has been located. Police said the driver suspected in the hit-and-run has also been located and is fully cooperating.
In November last year, 29 year old Emily Watson, a UPMC employee, was hit and killed by a shuttle bus while she was walking to work on Terrace Street.
And in 2020 — a 76 year old Air Force veteran, Lt. Col Jeanne Flaherty was also hit by a shuttle bus, and died on Terrace.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help support Jessie Maroney’s family. Click here to donate.
