WVU students mourn loss of student killed after falling from apartment building

MORGANTOWN, WVa. — Students at West Virginia University are in mourning after a student died from falling off an apartment building platform on Sunday.

Morgantown police said Brian Weithenauer, 19, fell from an apartment above Rain Night Club on High Street.

Weithenauer, who was originally from New Jersey, was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

“We’re all together right now, staying strong,” Phi Gamma Delta President Jeremy Gerdes said. “We’re remembering the good times more. That’s what’s helping out a lot.”

Gerdes said Weithenauer was a sophomore who studied business.

“You would see him walking across campus and he’d have this grin on his face,” Gerdes said. “He would make you laugh all the time.”

Investigators said they do not suspect foul play, but continue to investigate.

“There’s no indication of foul play,” Morgantown Police Department Chief Ed Preston said. “The victim at the time of the incident was on a wooden platform outside an apartment.”

Preston said paramedics rushed Weithenauer to a hospital where he died a short time later.

Gerdes said members of Phi Gamma Delta will drive to New Jersey Wednesday to be with Weithenauer’s family during his funeral.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled in Morgantown on Monday.
