GREENSBURG, Pa. — The Greensburg YMCA is looking to hire nearly 50 people.
Three years ago, when the YMCA in Greensburg was shut down due to COVID-19, there were 135 employees. Currently, there’s about half of that and the CEO says they have to fill these positions to be able to have normal operating hours and run all programs.
Just this week, the Y held a special hiring event that 11 News was told went well, but there are still plenty of openings.
The CEO of the Greensburg location said lifeguards, coaches and childcare staff are some of the most important roles they need to fill right now.
“Specifically in our child care programs, we’ve had several teacher types that have the credentials to be teaching in the school districts go ahead and do that because those jobs opened up,” said Suzanne Printz, CEO for the YMCA in Greensburg.
The shortage forced the Y to temporarily close its early childhood learning center, where as many as 160 kids under 5 years old could be served. It also drastically cut hours during the week, and cut swim hours at the pool.
We spoke with one employee who has been working at the Greensburg Y for 7 years.
“This place basically saved my life. I came here as a patron because I needed hip replacements, started taking aquatics therapy classes and then ended up teaching those classes. I quit my business and came here,” said Kris Peters, the aquatics and facilities director.

The Y is looking for people of all ages who are trying to find their purpose or give back to the community. There are part-time and full-time jobs available. They offer medical benefits and a very flexible schedule.
