Memorial for bicyclist who was hit, killed in Brookline keeps vanishing

PITTSBURGH — The memorial for a bicyclist who was hit and killed in Brookline keeps vanishing.

Austin Fike died in October, leaving behind a young son.

On the ground, you can see a few items are leftover from the memorial, but when you look up, it’s all gone. Fike’s family wants to know who is taking it down, and why?

“It hurts; it sucks. It hasn’t been two months, and it sucks,” said Haley Fike, Austin Fike’s sister.

Each time Haley Fike comes to the intersection of Brookline Boulevard and Pioneer Avenue, the sadness surrounding her brother’s death comes flooding back.

Austin Fike was riding his bike along the boulevard when he was struck and killed by a car in October.

“This intersection is never going to change now. So it would be nice to have something nice in his memory,” Haley Fike said.

That’s why family, friends and strangers decorated a tree in his honor. The memorial used to have candles, flowers and teddy bears set up, but on three separate occasions, the memorial has been torn down and destroyed.

“Please stop. Give us our stuff back. We are trying to keep the memories alive for the baby, and it’s not really fair to him or to our whole family to go through this again,” Haley Fike said.

Channel 11 checked with police. They said the city hasn’t received any complaints, and the family said they’ve checked with the nearby CVS and at this point, there’s no answer on who took it down.

“Honestly, we have no idea. It’s sad that we can’t have something throughout the holidays,” said Haley Fike.

They issued a plea to the person who is doing it.

“Just let my brother rest In peace. Leave the stuff there. It doesn’t have to be this way. it’s just causing more hurt for us than anything,” said Haley Fike.
