EAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Michael Rosfeld, the police officer who shot and killed 17-year-old Antwon Rose as he ran from a traffic stop has been charged with criminal homicide.
Rosfeld was sworn in to the East Pittsburgh Police Department hours before the shooting, according to the East Pittsburgh mayor.
We have learned Rosfeld had several years of experience working with other departments:
- He worked for the Harmar Police Department five years ago.
- He worked for the Oakmont Police Department from 2011-2013.
- He worked for the University of Pittsburgh police from 2012 - January 2018.
The University of Pittsburgh issued a statement regarding Officer Michael Rosfeld's departure from the university police department.
The University of Pittsburgh is saddened by the tragic shooting death of Antwon Rose in East Pittsburgh. For the record: we are cooperating fully with the Allegheny County Police Department's ongoing investigation. We have turned over all information we have regarding Michael Rosfeld's time as a Pitt police officer. We understand the public is also curious about Rosfeld's tenure at Pitt and we have seen increased speculation about the circumstances surrounding his departure – some of which may not be accurate. We believe, however, that any substantive comment we might provide could interfere with investigators' work and impact the intergrity of this ongoing investigation. Ultimately, we want nothing other than justice in this case, so we are refraining from commenting on further details regarding Rosfeld's departure at this time.

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, the vehicle Antwon Rose was in matched the description of a vehicle believed to be involved in a shooting in North Braddock just minutes before – about 8:20 p.m. June 19.
When Officer Rosfeld saw the vehicle in East Pittsburgh, he stopped the car and began to handcuff the driver, as cellphone video taken by a woman nearby has shown. While that was happening, Rose and another passenger got out and began to run away.
Three shots were fired by the officer, hitting and killing Rose.
