The best performer overall is the new Nissan Murano.  It has been designated as a Top Safety Pick after getting "good" ratings.

The Ford Flex earned an "acceptable" rating and also qualified as a Top Safety Pick.

The Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee and Hyundai Santa Fe were also tested and those SUVs only managed to earn "marginal" ratings.

The worst performing SUV was the Dodge Journey with a "poor" rating.

The Institute also tested the Jeep Wrangler-- but while it did well in the overlap test it offered only "marginal" protection in side and rear crashes and it is not recommended.

In prior tests, the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Kia Sorento and Nissan Pathfinder all earned mentions as Top Safety Picks.
