Missing 13-year-old Clarion Twp. girl died of accidental drowning, police say

CLARION TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Troopers investigating the death of a missing 13-year-old Clarion Township girl determined Monday evening that she was the victim of an accidental drowning.

An autopsy conducted earlier Monday revealed that Shevy McGiffin had drowned and that no foul play is suspected in her death, state police said.

Officials said Shevy McGiffin was found Sunday by the Clarion Volunteer Fire Department who were part of a search crew. McGiffin’s body was found in Trout Run near the Clarion River. Trout Run flows between the teenager's residence and the South Fifth Avenue Dollar General store.

The Erie County coroner Monday ruled the girl’s cause of death as drowning.

Pennsylvania State Police in Clarion said McGiffin left her Fraternity Drive home around 6:45 p.m. Friday when she left to go to the Dollar General Store on South Fifth Avenue. She was last seen in the area of Comet Warehouse and Dollar General, which is about one-fifth of a mile from her home.

McGiffin’s father told the media that he believed his daughter was abducted.

“He seen her talking to an older gentleman in a gray or brown Buick,” Tina Schneider, McGiffin’s mother said.

The community gathered to search for the missing Clarion Limestone seventh grader.
