Photos: Jimmy Carter returns to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state

Former President Jimmy Carter lay in state for a second day Wednesday in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, where members of the public will be able to pay their respects to the 39th U.S. President. As photos show below, Carter's remains were flown from Atlanta to Maryland's Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday afternoon, where a motorcade traveled to the U.S. Navy Memorial. The his casket was transferred ceremonially to a horse-drawn chest that traveled to the U.S. Capitol.

Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Mike Johnson, members of Congress, Cabinet secretaries and Carter's family members were among those who offered tributes to the former president in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday.

Carter will lie in state in the Capital Rotunda until Thursday, when his funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral. His remains will then be flown back to Georgia for a final private service in Plains. The former president will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at his family's peanut farm.
