Plum school district faces 2nd suit over student sex abuse

PLUM, Pa. — A second former student is suing the Plum Area School District, where three former teachers pleaded guilty to having sexual relationships with students.

A federal lawsuit filed Friday alleges Plum Senior High School teacher Jason Cooper fondled the student and spoke to her in a sexual manner when she was a 17-year-old student. The former student alleges Cooper had sex with her after she turned 18.

Cooper is currently serving up to three years in prison for corruption of minors and other offenses. Two other former teachers have also pleaded guilty to student sex charges.

A grand jury found "systematic failures to protect students," but concluded school officials broke no laws.

Court documents show that the most recent lawsuit names Cooper, Plum borough, the school district, district officials and others as defendants. The dockets specifically name school district Superintendent Timothy Glasspool, high school Principal Ryan Kociela and Cooper.

The suit says school officials refused to investigate the matter or inform police. It also states the district did not properly train teachers and staff, and often protected teachers by never documenting incidents.

Officials with the school district did not respond to Channel 11's request for an on-camera interview.
