EAST DEER, Pa. — A baby girl overdosed on heroin in East Deer on Tuesday after police said she ingested the drug while a woman who was supposed to be watching her was sleeping.
Officers responded to Sara Tate’s Marion Street home around 2 p.m. Tuesday after someone called 911 about an unresponsive baby.
Police said the 9-month-old baby was injected with Narcan when paramedics arrived and then rushed to Children’s Hospital, where she was admitted into the ICU in stable condition.
Tate is charged with aggravated assault, child endangerment, tampering with evidence and drug possession in connection with the incident. She is currently in the Allegheny County Jail.
Police said Tate’s daughter, 12, and sister-in-law, 10, were left to watch the baby so Tate could “take a nap” downstairs.
The children were in a bedroom on the second floor, and while watching the baby, police said the girls removed a stamp bag from the baby’s mouth and took it to Tate. Police said Tate told them she confirmed it was heroin by “biting it in her own mouth.”
Police said there were five children under the age of 12 in the home, in addition to the baby. They were taken into protective custody and then brought to Children’s Hospital to be evaluated.
Tate was taken into custody at the hospital after police said they figured out she had an outstanding bench warrant.
