Police determine no attempted luring incident at Canonsburg school

CANONSBURG, Pa. — After a letter was sent home to parents in the Canon McMillan School District Tuesday about an attempted luring incident at the district’s middle school, Channel 11’s Cara Sapida has learned police determined the incident was a misunderstanding.

“Of course, as a parent, I feel alarmed, but these are the times we are living in. I give the school a lot of credit for communicating it to the parents,” Deb Coury, the parent of an eighth-grade student and a senior, said.

According to the letter from the superintendent, a man in his 50s pulled up along the parent pick-up area at the middle school around 4 p.m. Monday after track practice ended, approached four girls and said, “Your ride is here."

The superintendent wrote the man then took a second pass through the pick-up area.%

Canonsburg Police Chief Al Coghill told Sapida the school’s track coach was nearby and felt that something was off about the situation. Coghill said the coach was able to memorize the driver’s license plate.

Authorities said they tracked down the driver and learned that he’s a relative who was picking up a student.

While police determined there was no threat to students, they said the incident is a good reminder for parents to talk to their children about safety.

Meanwhile, the school district is asking parents to talk to their children about safety.

“We have had the talk about stranger danger, and after hearing this, we need to have it again,” parent Kara Bizick said.
