Once they arrived, investigators learned Lewis was taken from the reported shooting scene on Seventh Street in Braddock to a local hospital in critical condition. At approximately 12:16 p.m., Lewis was pronounced dead at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, according to county police officials.
Investigators said Lewis was inside the club with a friend. The friend got into an argument with a woman inside, left the club and walked to his car. Police said he texted Lewis to see where he was and heard gunshots being fired.
“It’s not fair man. You’re angry, you’re sad -- all of these emotions all into one. It’s just hard to believe," Marcus Burkey said.
Friends of Lewis said that he was a family man, a business owner and was a huge proponent for the revitalization of Braddock. Burkey, a friend and business partner, said he doesn’t want this incident to define Lewis’ legacy.
“There’s a lot of stories out there. The truth will come out eventually but Jason is just...he sees someone in trouble and he cares about it. He’s gonna speak up.”
Lewis’ gregarious personality and booming voice were constants in Braddock. Friends said he was a huge positive influence, handing out hope on a daily basis.
“He was a representative of Braddock. You take a big piece like that out of the community, it’s hard to bounce back," Barkley said.
Detectives said they are in the process of reviewing surveillance video from the club. At this point, no arrests have been made.
