NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. — A man is facing charges after he robbed a cashier at the North Versailles Walmart, only to come outside and find his cab driver was gone, police said.
Authorities said just before 8 p.m. Thursday, Guy Jeffries, of Braddock, took a cab to the Walmart and went inside the store.
He walked up to a cash register with a bottle of hand sanitizer and handed the cashier a $20 to pay. Police said as she was making change, Jeffries ordered her to give him all the money in the drawer.
Because he was laughing, the cashier thought he was joking, authorities said. Jeffries then reached over and grabbed cash out of the drawer and ran out of the store.
Outside the store, Jeffries found that his cab driver had also gone inside the store to buy something, so Jeffries walked to a nearby Wendy’s and ordered a burger and fries, police said.
Authorities said Jeffries was sitting near a window with his meal inside the Wendy’s when a North Versailles police officer recognized him from surveillance video and took him into custody.
Police said a blue plastic bag with $2,200 of cash inside and hand sanitizer was found on the table where Jeffries was sitting.
Jeffries, who was convicted of robbery in 1997, is charged with robbery and theft.
