Proud to be from Pittsburgh: Honoring real-life heroes in Canonsburg

CANONSBURG, Pa. — Children at Saint Patrick’s School in Canonsburg had special guests for lunch on Friday. There were the regular lunch trays and tables, but sitting side by side with the kids were real-life superheroes.

Members of the Canonsburg Police and Fire departments were guests of honor at lunch, and sat down for a meal with the children.

“We are all still thinking of all the Canonsburg Police and Fire departments after what happened to Scott Bashioum and we wanted to let them know they are in our hearts,” said Carrie Gallagher, a second-grade teacher at the school.

Gallagher said students were very aware of the tragedy that took the life of Officer Bashioum and injured Officer James Saieva. A third officer at the scene that day, who tried to pull his fellow officers to safety, attended the luncheon. He has a child who attends St. Patrick's School.

“Canonsburg as a town has been wonderful to us as a police department through this whole event, and this is just another example of the continuing support that we receive as a department,” said Sgt. Donald Cross.

Police Chief Alex Coghill could barely fit his knees beneath the table, but said he wouldn’t have missed the lunch for anything.
