PITTSBURGH — A Vandergrift family's love for their dog inspired the creation of a charity that benefits no-kill shelters.
The Held family has three rambunctious boys and two lively rescue dogs. But a few years ago, they lost a special member of their family named Tiny.
Although Tiny weighed more than 100 pounds, he was a gentle giant.
Tiny had to be put down, but the Held family carries his memory with them through the nonprofit created in his name.
"It's for a good cause, just to help out all the animal shelters," Jim Held said.
Tiny Cause donates the profits from the sales of all-natural dog treats to no-kill shelters.
"My husband, myself and our three boys bake them, and we bake them with love," Darla Held said.
Sales have exceeded the family's expectations.
"When we did this, the boys and I had thought, maybe we'll get to $100, maybe $200," Darla Held said.
They have since hit $6,000.
"Me and my dad are competing for best salesman. He has a tiny lead on me," Tyler Held said. "No pun intended."
The family's efforts reach beyond helping animals, becoming a learning experience for the Held boys.
"It helps build fundamentals, caring about something else besides themselves," Jim Held said.
