Rare white bison calf born in Westmoreland County

DONEGAL, Pa. — A white bison calf was born at Living Treasures Wild Animal Park in Donegal late last month.

The male calf, named Liberty, was born on April 29, the park announced Wednesday.

According to the National Bison Association, one out of 10 million bison births are white bison.

The rare animals have long held sacred and spiritual value to Native American communities.

Living Treasures has seen several rituals performed in honor of Buttercup, the park’s adult female white bison.

Earlier this week, President Obama signed into law the Bison Legacy Act, which names the American Bison as the country’s national mammal.

Guests can visit Liberty and 10 other baby animals, as well as two-towed sloths and porcupines, which are new for this season.
