PITTSBURGH — In the Squires family, the old adage, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” couldn’t be more true for what is not a multi-generational family of doctors who have dedicated their work to the health of future generations.

Throughout the years, the Squires’ family tree has literally uprooted itself from its Texas beginnings and now calls Pittsburgh home.

“We never lived a long time anywhere north of Texas, so this was a completely different environment,” said Robert Squires, a gastroenterologist at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Robert and Janet Squires have been working beside one another for many years in the medical field. The pair met during medical residency training at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and have been together ever since.

After getting married in 1979, the Squires moved to Texas, where they began raising their family and working in Dallas.

The pair would live in North Texas for many years with their family until 2003. After sending their children off to college, the pair moved away. They would relocate to continue their careers at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

While Robert Squires works as a gastroenterologist, Janet Squires works with the division of child advocacy, helping prevent things such as abuse and neglect.

As Robert and Janet Squires continued dedicating their lives to pediatric health in their own careers, a second generation of Squires were rapidly working their way up their own career ladders in medicine.

Jim Squires, the son of Robert and Janet, began working at Children’s along with his wife, Judy Squires.

Jim and Judy Squires began at Children’s Hospital during the summer of 2015.

“Working with him has been spectacular,” Robert Squires said.

Jim and Judy Squires met early in their careers in a similar fashion as Jim’s parents did. While in medical school, the couple met while simply riding bikes to class, and began dating during college in Texas.

“We were neighbors. We didn’t know it, but we were neighbors,” Jim Squires said.

Like the pair that preceded them, the young couple hit the road, moving from North Texas to Cincinnati for a few years. As fate would have it, an opportunity would present itself for both Jim and Judy Squires at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

While they all work in their own realm, the Squires really enjoy having each other around the workplace.

“It is awesome to work in the same hospital as my in-laws,” Judy Squires said. “I’m not just saying that, either.”

With two generations of Squires’ doctors working at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, medicine has become a family business.
