ASPINWALL, Pa. — More businesses say they’ve taken steps to reopen safely, regardless of which phase Gov. Wolf has put them in.

That includes a spa in Aspinwall.

Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine has said they can’t reopen because it’s a hands-on business.

But the owners of EsSpa say they can do it safely.

You'll sanitize your hands, grab a pair of gloves, and have your temperature taken upon entering, before you can go any further.

EsSpa owners Scott and Eva Kerschbaumer are ready to welcome their customers back. They were having their best year yet until all business stopped mid-March.

“It's not just the money, it’s the being with your customers, it’s the contact. We’ve been open 20 years. You get to know these people," Scott said.

They showed Channel 11 more safety measures they've put in place.

The nail technicians will be wearing a face shield, and you’ll notice the plexiglass between the technician and the customer.

Everything is thrown away. The nail files, plus all the paper over the massage tables. No linens yet. And the employees will have on face shields and gloves.

“I just want to be able to work safely. It’s important to me that my staff feels safe and my clients,” Eva said.

She reached out to us, requesting the state allow them to reopen in the yellow phase if these measures are in place.

“So yes, you can keep the other customers socially distanced and everyone can wear a mask, but by definition it is going to involve hands-on treatment as part of those services and so thus we are not allowing them in the red and yellow subs,” said Dr. Rachel Levine.

“I think that is offensive of the state to consider that we don’t have the common sense or the courtesy for both our employees and our customers to go out of our way to make sure everybody is safe,” Scott said.
