1 dead, two firefighters injured in house fire in Pittsburgh neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — One person was killed and two firefighters were injured in a following a house fire in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood

Firefighters were called to a house fire Tuesday afternoon just before 2 p.m. at a home on Knox Avenue.

Thick smoke can be seen pouring from the home as firefighters climb in and out of windows.

A woman managed to escape the home, and told Channel 11 when the fire started she said she immediately grabbed her three dogs and ran out — but her dad went upstairs to grab their other two dogs.

She said she saw her dad through the second floor window yelling “I’m going to die I’m going to die.”

The woman reported that the man was going to jump but it was too high so she went next door to grab a ladder and when she came back — her dad was no longer there.

Firefighters tell Channel 11 when they entered the home to try to get to the second floor, the stairwell collapsed. Two firefighter was injured. Both were transported, but with minor injuries.

“In attempts to get to the second floor the interior stairwell collapsed so crews had to use ladders to gain entry to the second floor,” Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said.

Once on the second floor, crews found the deceased male. The cause of his death is unknown.

“It’s a bad fire it was a blaze we saw thick smoke and flames shooting from the roof,” neighbor Felina Mai said. “Flames were 30 feet high. I saw it over this building and ran over. "

Right now the cause of the fire is under investigation but the woman reported an electrical outlet on the first floor caught fire — catching her couch on fire — causing the big blaze.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
