ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. — The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Friday that two of its schools will be closing at the end of the 2019-20 school year, and four others will be merging.

Saint Maria Goretti School in Bloomfield and East Catholic School in Forest Hills will both close after this year, according to a release.

Four other Catholic schools in the region will merge starting in 2020-21 to form one unified program:

  • Saint Anne in Castle Shannon
  • St. Bernard in Mount Lebanon
  • Our Lady of Grace in Scott Township
  • St. Thomas More in Bethel Park

The diocese said that new program will have two preschool through 8th grade sites: one at St. Thomas More and one at St. Bernard.

Officials cited multiple reasons for the closures and mergers, including declining enrollment and increasing school debt.
