SOMERSET, Pa. — An African elephant calf was born at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s International Conservation Center in Somerset!
The birth announcement was made Wednesday. The calf, a girl, was born in the early morning hours of July 18, coming in at just under three feet tall and weighing 218 pounds.
Zoo officials said the baby and her mother, Sukuri, are bonding. Both are doing well.
The baby is the first calf for Sukuri. The pregnancy was a result of natural breeding with resident bull
elephant, Jackson, officials said.
The baby is expected to stay with her mother at the International Conservation Center.
