BUTLER, Pa. — The Alameda Waterpark in Butler County opened over the weekend, after pushing back the opening date for several weeks.
Kids like Carter and Benny Nadiak are very excited. Their dad Jeff said they’ve been looking forward to some fun in the water since so many pools were closed last summer due to COVID-19.
“That’s one of the best parts of summer for a kid is going to the pool,” Jeff said. “So they were pretty bummed last year so we were hoping this year as life kind of gets back to normal we can get going again because it’s definitely they are water babies they love going.”
But now — pools are running into another problem. Butler County is being forced to change pool hours due to staffing issues. Alameda Waterpark is now closed two days a week and open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 12:15 to 5 p.m. Then on Fridays and Saturdays the pool will stay open until 7 p.m.
“It’s a shame I see both sides of it if you’re a kid and worried about the virus or your parents telling you it’s scary I can totally understand the hesitation to be around alot of people,” Jeff said.
According to the park’s Facebook page Butler County Parks and Recreation won’t be able to offer group and private swim lessons due to limited staff. Folks will get a full refund for swim lessons.
Also there will be no new bookings for private and public pool parties. However those who already booked a party can keep that event.
Water aerobics will be on Wednesday nights only.
And if you have a seasonal pass you’ll receive a 50 percent refund due to limited hours.
The county is still looking to hire more lifeguards offering $10 per hour, plus incentives including referrals, certification fees and a complimentary family pool pass.
County officials say this new incentive program was created to help attract high school and college age lifeguards as well as retirees.
Nadiak says he’s just happy the pool is open for his boys to enjoy this summer.
“I’m very grateful I saw they are only closed two days a week so that’s doable for sure,” he said.
