Aliquippa working to combat blight, create affordable housing

ALIQUIPPA, Pa. — A grassy field no far from Aliquippa High School could soon be the site of a new housing complex.

Called “the bricks,” it used to be a nice spot decades ago before homes there were torn down. It’s something an Aliquippa councilman hopes can help jump-start changes.

“Having new housing units in Aliquippa shows a rebirth and revitalization,” councilman Don Walker said. “Once you remove all this jungle, it’s ready for housing to be built, but we got to clear everything up so everyone can see what’s under here. Right now its like a jungle.”

He said this project could help alleviate issues at other housing units that are 60 years old.

“They’re beat up and they’ve been lived in. So if we put housing units here, we will create homeownership,” Walker said.

Lifelong Aliquippa resident Stephen Collins said he’s seen the community change quite a bit and it’s now time to make things better.

“They got to do a lot of stuff since the mill shut down,” he said. “I think it’s a good thing because they do need housing around here.”
