Amazon payment scam has local police issuing warning

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Scammers posing as Amazon representatives have the Shaler Township Police Department warning the public.

The scammers ask victims to purchase eBay and Target gift cards to make a payment, then have them read off the card numbers, police said.

Shaler Township police said they have taken several fraud reports related to the scam, which uses phone calls and official looking emails to get in contact with victims.

“These scams are well rehearsed and initially appear legitimate,” Shaler Township police said in a Facebook post.

Police are reminding people that no legitimate payment process would include the purchase of gift cards or the use of Western Union.

Elderly people are typically the targeted victims, police said.
