Two local school districts canceled classes Monday due to unrelated threats made over the weekend.
The Apollo-Ridge and Blackhawk School Districts both announced Sunday that schools would be closed to all students and faculty due to threats – both made online.
Apollo-Ridge announced there would be no classes on Monday after receiving information about a threat made on social media.
Kiski Township Police said that several parents contacted them regarding the threat toward Apollo-Ridge, which has spread through social media. The threat appeared to be made toward the school district, as “it was given to a middle schooler at the district,” police said via Facebook.
As a precaution, the Apollo-Ridge School District decided to cancel all classes on Monday, according to the district’s website.
School officials said law enforcement is investigating the threat, and while it does not mention one school specifically, they wanted to take an “abundance of caution” and remain closed for all students and staff on Monday.
Blackhawk School District also canceled classes for Monday due to a threat made on social media.
Blackhawk’s case was similar, in that the administration was made aware of the “statements made on social media that have caused concern for many of our residents,” according to the district’s website.

The school district said that local law enforcement completed an investigation of the individuals responsible for the posts, and the administration met with police Sunday evening.
The school district also said that it is “in the process” of determining if the threat made toward the school was credible.
