PITTSBURGH — An argument over a ladder led to a shooting that prompted a standoff Monday night in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood, police said.
Pittsburgh police and Allegheny County SWAT officers swarmed a home on Walter Street, where the shooting suspect, Michael Rooney, was seen sitting out of a second-floor window and refused to come out.
Before the standoff, Rooney allegedly shot a man in the leg on nearby Industry Street about 6 p.m., authorities said.
According to a criminal complaint, the shooting victim told police there was an argument over a ladder he borrowed from Rooney, who walked into the victim’s kitchen and pointed a gun at him.
The victim said Rooney shot him because he was upset that the ladder was allegedly sold for drug money, the complaint said.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities were later called to Walter Street and the standoff unfolded.
Police said Rooney initially admitted to the shooting, then denied it and threatened “suicide by cop.”
Rooney later surrendered and told officers the victim owed him money because he was “robbed for a ladder” so the victim could get heroin.
Rooney was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
