PITTSBURGH — A major restaurant group in our region announced Sunday it has to temporarily close its specialty eateries.
The Big Burrito Restaurant Group told Channel 11 that it cannot operate a number of its restaurants under the latest COVID-19 guidelines, which right now only allows for 25% capacity indoors.
Included on the list of places are Eleven, Kaya, Soba and Umi - two of which are in the Strip District.
The president told Channel 11 they will lay off a “couple hundred” employees and adds they are constantly evaluating how to reopen some or all of the restaurants as the situation evolves.
“With 25% of the seats in dining room, that’s 10 people I can feed,” said Bill Fuller, president of the Big Burrito Group. “If it rains outside, we can’t do it, we just cant do it.”
Big Burrito Group also owns Mad Mex restaurants, but those are staying open.
