Blast of winter brings snow, bitter wind chills to region

PITTSBURGH — Snow showers and gusty winds will greet you today.

Periods of snow will stick around for much of the day today before tapering off this afternoon.

Snow will mix with rain at times as temperatures stay into the mid to upper 30s.  Strong winds at 20-30 mph will make it feel like upper 20s and low 30s much of the day.

Most of the area will see less than an inch, primarily on grassy surfaces by the end of the day Friday.  A couple of inches of snow are likely in the mountains where

are in effect through this evening.

With regard to Friday's

home opener, Pirates spokesman Brian Warecki said,“We have been and will continue to closely monitor the weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon.  While the temperatures will be in the lower range for early April in Pittsburgh, we believe that we will open the 2017 season at PNC Park as scheduled.  We will, of course, continue to work closely with our weather service providers and monitor any developments overnight and into the morning hours.”

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Flood Advisory for the Ohio River at Pittsburgh from Friday evening to Sunday evening.
