Neighbors concerned about proposed halfway house in residential area

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. — Residents of one Fayette County neighborhood are outraged after business owner proposed putting a halfway house and rehab center just feet away from a school bus stop.

"Being so close, just that block away from that, I feel very unsafe for my children," Jennifer Polacek said.

Jennifer and Ike Polacek got a letter in the mail, detailing the possible zoning change that would allow for the halfway house.

Officials wrote that the potential owner of the halfway house is asking for an exception on the property, which is noted as "high-density residential."

"Our main concern was the amount of children in the area within a two-block radius. There’s probably 50-60 children, easily," Ike Polacek said.

One of the big concerns that parents are worried about is that there is a school bus stop for children just feet away.

The entire neighborhood didn't get the letter, so the couple made copies.

Brownsville officials said the Fayette County Zoning Hearing Board has delayed the decision for 45 days. Until then, residents will anxiously wait.
