Bullet strikes window of Butler Area SD elementary school

BUTLER, Pa. — A school in the Butler Area School District was placed on lockdown Tuesday after a stray bullet struck a window.

According to a letter sent home to parents, McQuiston Elementary School was locked down so police could investigate. A back window of the building was broken, and a bullet was discovered outside the window.

“Pretty scary,” said Jory Melik, the parent of a first grade student. “We are in kinda a secure neighborhood. I don’t know why anyone is firing guns, or whatnot.”

Other schools in the Butler Area School District were notified and placed on a perimeter lockdown, the letter said. Parents were notified, and afternoon kindergarten was cancelled.

“The first thing I want is for my kid to be safe. That is what they did,” said Nicole Hannes, the parent of a kindergarten student.

Butler police determined that the bullet was a stray, shot from a hunting-type rifle from considerable distance, the letter said. The bullet struck the ground first and ricocheted into the window, breaking it.

Once police determined there was no threat, the lockdown was lifted and students were sent home.

Nobody was hurt.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
