Shots fired at car leaving high school basketball game, leading to crash

McKEESPORT, Pa. — A car fleeing from gunfire in McKeesport crashed and rolled over, sending three people -- including two teenagers -- to the hospital Tuesday night, police said.

The car had just left a basketball game at McKeesport Area High School and was traveling on Washington Street when someone began shooting toward it shortly before 9 p.m., according to investigators.

As the car’s driver, a 40-year-old man, tried to get away, he crashed into a utility pole, police said. The car then rolled onto its roof in the front yard of a home on Washington Street.

Three passengers in the car -- a 16-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl and a 26-year-old man -- were hurt in the crash, but were not shot, police said.

An ambulance took the 16-year-old to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, officials said. The 15-year-old and 26-year-old also went to the hospital and were each listed in stable condition. The car’s driver was not hurt.

The teens are freshman at Woodland Hills High School, district officials said.

The victims had just left a basketball game between Woodland Hills and McKeesport when the incident happened.

Police are not sure if the victims were targeted, but according to the McKeesport School District, there were no problems at the game. Neighbors whose cars took some of those bullets are praying the 16-year-old will be okay.

Investigators don’t have any suspects at this point, but they described the suspect’s car as a silver 2011 Ford F-150 with a moon roof and Pa. tags KKA-1469.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a silver 2011 Ford F-150 Platinum with a moon roof and tonneau cover with a Pennsylvania registration of KKA-1469.

Initially police were searching for a black SUV in connection with the shooting; however, investigators now say that information was incorrect.

Multiple parked vehicles were struck by the gunfire, police said.

“It was chaotic, really fast, because you heard several shots and they were in succession, so it wasn’t a handgun or anything. I’m not sure what it was, but it was hectic for a second,” Chris Hickman, a neighbor, said.

The whole incident was a sobering moment for resident Tiffany Montgomery. She and her neighbors heard non-stop gunfire and woke up to find their cars riddled with bullets.

“There’s a hole right there in the passenger seat. That’s the side I usually put my youngest grandson’s car seat,” Montgomery said.

She showed Channel 11 at least 3 bullet holes on her Ford Fusion parked outside of her home.

Duquesne Light crews have successfully restored power to the neighborhood and fixed the pole.

No one has been arrested.
