Challenging high school basketball season ahead for many with pandemic still in full swing

PITTSBURGH — State officials paused high school winter sports for three weeks due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. Even with an extended season, playing an entire schedule of games will be a challenge. Many schools are playing three games per week instead of two.

“Most weeks, you play back-to-back nights, so it’s difficult to prepare for both teams,” said Seneca Valley Boys Basketball Coach Kevin Trost.

Trost said their game against South Fayette a few days ago was canceled because of the coronavirus. The team’s game against North Hills next week is being rescheduled because a coach there tested positive.

“This is already the second team that was on our scheduled we had to deal with a COVID-19 issue and reschedule,” he said. “I feel terrible that they are having to through the COVID-19 issues.”

Trost said teams are working together and being flexible because of how unprecedented this situation is.
