Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh enrolling children in Moderna COVID-19 vaccine trial

PITTSBURGH — UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is enrolling children in a Moderna COVID-19 pediatric vaccine trial.

Children’s Hospital joined the “KidCOVE” trial through the Pittsburgh Vaccine Trials Unit, which is one of 100 study sites in the U.S. and Canada participating in the study, according to a Wednesday news release.

Children’s Hospital officials said children ages 6 months to 12 years are being enrolled. Overall, the study is looking to enroll 7,050 children.

“The trial is a Phase 2/3 study of the mRNA-1273 vaccine, which is the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in December granted an emergency use authorization for people age 18 and older,” the release said.

“We’re excited. We’ve been doing vaccine studies for years,” UPMC Pediatric Infectious Disease physician Dr. Judith Martin said. “Every age group is different. The doses could be different, the side effects could be different. That’s why it’s critical to conduct the research studies to make that determination.”
