CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Construction on the MSA Thruway, the tunnel that will connect Interstate 79 to the Cranberry Springs development in Cranberry Township, is getting underway.
The tunnel is being constructed under Route 228.
Daytime paving for the project is scheduled to begin May 11, taking place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to Cranberry Township officials.
Starting May 16, traffic lanes will be shifted to the north so that tunnel excavation work can begin.

Officials said traffic will be maintained on Route 228 throughout the project.
In addition to the tunnel, the project includes putting in a roundabout at the approach to the tunnel from I-79. Sidewalks and bike lanes will also be added.
The project is expected to be completed by the winter of 2021.
