Convincing patients to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine again

PITTSBURGH — With the resumption of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine being administered, the challenge now becomes how to convince people it is still safe.

“The clotting seems to be relatively concentrated in relatively young women,” said Pitt professor of epidemiology Dr. Lee Harrison. “Even that age group, it’s still a very rare complication.”

The initial cases of blood clots were in young women, leading many in that age group to be concerned about the vaccine. The FDA decided to not limit the vaccine’s use by gender or age, but there will be an alert added to the vaccine’s label.

“Regardless, the risks from any of the vaccines are very, very low. The risks of COVID-19 are very high,” Harrison said.
