COVID-19 causing staffing shortages in Norwin School District

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — Hundreds of students and staff members in the Norwin School District had to be quarantined for up to 14 days in the past four weeks due to the coronavirus.

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Taylor told school board members on Monday evening the district is facing a severe shortage of substitute teachers and paraprofessionals because of COVID-19.

“There are literally not enough employees in the building to make sure the students are safe and ensure instruction is going forward,” Taylor said.

Taylor is also recommending the district continue with a hybrid learning model, saying a switch to five days of in-person instruction could lead to additional school closures.

“This is starting to become a trend at our high schools in southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Taylor.

The district plans to add synchronous online learning to provide more interactive instruction.

A vote on the district safety plan is expected at the next school board meeting.
