Dozens of vendors, food bank to take hit from early closure of Pittsburgh’s Holiday Market

PITTSBURGH — The Holiday Market in Pittsburgh’s Market Square must close down because of new COVID-19 restrictions announced Thursday by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.

Business owners and vendors planned to have spots in the market until Dec. 23. Not only are they impacted, but there is a ripple effect beyond the businesses set up there.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is also taking a hit. It was set to be on the receiving end of funds raised from the Santa Zoom Experience, which can’t continue.

In all, 35 vendors are impacted by the closure.

The Merry Market Pop-Up, which was scheduled for this weekend, also won’t happen.

The Peoples Gas Holiday Market, Merry Market Pop-Up and Santa Zoom Experience will close for the season at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The Downtown Pittsburgh Partnership is encouraging people to visit vendors online and shop local. (CLICK HERE to see a list of the vendors and HERE for more local shopping options.)

Jeremy Waldrup, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership CEO and president, released the following statement:

“We’re disappointed that the Holiday Market had to be cut short, but we understand the need to adhere to these new requirements for the safety of both our shoppers and vendors. The health and wellbeing of visitors Downtown has been a priority throughout the implementation of this seasons’ programs and attractions. Now, it is more important than ever to support Downtown’s small businesses, visit their web and social platforms to find ways to shop online, order takeout, or visit our expanded outdoor dining spaces. We hope that the community continues to rally behind these businesses – it’s absolutely critical to help them make it through this pandemic.”
