Driver crashes into cemetery, damages headstones

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — A driver crashed into a Brackenridge cemetery Sunday, damaging several headstones, fire officials said.

The crash happened in Prospect Cemetery, where officials told Channel 11 the driver may have had a seizure that caused her to lose control of the car.

Emergency crews had to cut off the roof of the car to free the driver, who was airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital, TribLIVE reported. While the driver and a passenger were in the hospital Monday, they both are expected to be OK.

The cemetery has headstones dating back to the mid- to late-1800s. Cindy Hamburg, who is president of the cemetery, said eight headstones were knocked over.

"We've been having a streak of bad luck up here," Hamburg said. "Last month we had a tree fall over and we had that to take care of, then we had people setting fireworks off up here and they burned the grass and knocked over a tombstone."

The driver's insurance is expect to pay for the damage, officials said.
