WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — The driver of a tanker truck was rescued Thursday morning after crashing 50 feet over an embankment along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County.

The accident was reported about 9:30 a.m. between the Irwin and New Stanton interchanges, near mile marker 70.

Ropes and an ATV were used to rescue the driver from the truck and bring him up the hillside. An ambulance took the driver to Forbes Regional Hospital to be checked out. The truck company is from Wisconsin and the truck appeared to be hauling water.

Pennsylvania State Police said a steering tire blew from the truck, causing the driver to lose control.

Kathy Chobirko, who lives on Beeno Road across from the crash, said it sounded like a small bomb went off.  Chobirko said she has heard the sound of tires blowing on turnpike often.

The turnpike was restricted to one lane while crews were at the scene.
