2 people escape fire that spread from second-floor deck of duplex in Butler

BUTLER, Pa. — A fire on the second-floor deck of a duplex spread late Sunday night in Butler.

The fire was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Third Street, spreading from the deck to the apartment and attic, fire officials said.

Two people who live in the second-floor apartment were home when the fire broke out, officials said. They were able to get out safely.

Most of the damage was done to the second-floor apartment, but the first-floor apartment sustained water damage.

One person who lives in the first-floor apartment was not home. Their cat was inside, however, and was rescued by firefighters, officials said.

The Red Cross is providing help to the people who live in the duplex.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
