ALLEGHENY COUNTY — Allegheny County announced the death of former county police superintendent Charles Moffatt Sunday morning.
Moffatt retired as superintendent in March 2016 following a 48-year career in law enforcement and nearly 50 years of continuous service to the county and its residents. He served as superintendent for 12 years after serving with the Pittsburgh Police Department for 36 years.
Immediately following his graduation from high school, Moffatt joined the United States Air Force, serving for eight years before returning to Pittsburgh where he began his law enforcement career with the City of Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Police. Beginning as a patrolman, he worked his way up through the ranks over the next 36 years, becoming the first deputy chief of police of the bureau. He left his position as deputy chief to assume the position of superintendent of the county police.
During his tenure, the county police force became one of only 101 accredited police agencies within the state, according to a news release.
Since his retirement, Moffatt had spent time with his family, including his children and grandchildren.
