Giant Eagle working to expand curbside service in the North and East suburbs

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle's move to turn its Green Tree store into a new "curbside pickup center" is immediately apparent in the parking lot, where jersey barriers block customers from driving in front and there are 40 parking spaces designated with instruction signs on how to stay put and wait for your order to be brought to you.

It's a new approach that turned what was a typical grocery store of about 46,000 square feet into an a curbside pickup center that adopts more of an e-commerce approach to retail.

Dan Donovan, spokesman for Giant Eagle, said the company has been able to ramp up the operation of the new curbside pickup center after first implementing the style of operation in established stores in Cleveland and the Akron area.

With the Green Tree location just outside the city along the Parkway West well-poised to serve the west and south suburbs, Donovan said Giant Eagle is also working to expand its curbside service elsewhere in the region as well.

“In the coming days, we’re looking at stores in the north and the east,” he said.
