Greensburg woman accused of impersonating military member, scamming person in North Carolina

GREENSBURG, Pa. — A Greensburg woman faces criminal charges after investigators in North Carolina said she impersonated a member of the military and scammed a person through a dating website.

According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, investigators took a fraud report at the end of January from a victim saying a woman they had met on an online dating website claimed to be a member of the military. Deputies said the woman claimed to need money to ship her belongings home from overseas. The victim paid $7,500.

Through their investigation, deputies determined the woman was using a fake name. They were able to identify her as Jo Ann Burkey, 63, from Greensburg.

Investigators said she surrendered on July 15 to detectives at the Pitt County Detention Center where she was charged with accessing a computer to defraud or obtain property, obtaining property by false pretense and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

Burkey was released after posting a $25,000 bond.

Pitt County includes the city of Greenville and sits between Raleigh and the coast.
