PITTSBURGH — A water main break tore up a road Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh’s Arlington neighborhood.

Water began gushing along Parkwood Road about 4:30 a.m. It made it into at least one home, officials said.

Neighbors woke up to the sound of the water rushing down the street.

“It looks like white rapids,” Karen Thurner, who lives on Parkwood Road, said. “It keeps bubbling up.”

Once the water was shut off, the extent of the damage could be seen. Asphalt was lifted and holes were left behind in several areas.

Pennsylvania-American Water said a 16-inch line, which was installed in 1925, broke on Parkwood Road, near Mountain Avenue. About 40 customers are affected by the break, Pennsylvania-American Water said.

Parkwood Road is closed between Otillia Street and Mountain Avenue, which will likely continue until Friday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, crews were continuing work. Service was restored around 11 p.m.
