Here’s why the wait for new checks is taking longer for some bank customers

PITTSBURGH — The phrase, “Check’s in the mail,” is now causing a different type of frustration.

If you’re running low on checks, you might not want to wait till just a final few remain before ordering more books. The process could take twice the time — as much as four weeks — than in the past, some customers are being told by their banks.

But it’s not a banking problem, it’s a shipping issue.

At least two of Pittsburgh’s largest banks acknowledged delays.

“KeyBank is aware of delivery issues caused by delays in the U.S. Postal Service,” said Michael Conlin, a spokesman for Cleveland-based KeyBank (NYSE:KEY), which ranks No. 7 by deposit market share in the 10-county Pittsburgh metro, said via email. “We understand these delays can be frustrating. For clients who order checkbooks, there are options available to expedite delivery for a fee, along with obtaining checks immediately in branches for a fee for most checking accounts. Clients are also being alerted of potential delays in the mailing system.”
