Home and business owners prepare for possible Ida flooding

ALLEGHENY COUNTY — Homeowners and business owners who are in areas in Allegheny County that are known to flood, are preparing for heavy rain, as remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to push through the area.

Some residents are still dealing with the damage from previous storms. Homeowner Jeff Stephan said his home flooded earlier this month after a storm ripped through Allegheny County, damaging appliances.

“Wiped out...washer and dryer gone, furnace saved this time, it has been built up on blocks,” he said. “I have three of these de-humidifiers running, day and night.

Outside of his home damaged items of value sit on the porch. It’s a problem that Stephan believes he isn’t responsible for, so he plans on meeting with Carnegie officials hoping they’ll offer a solution.

Now, Stephan is preparing for remnants of Hurricane Ida, hoping they won’t be nearly as bad as Hurricane Ivan.

“After seeing this weather report, I raised our washer and dryer up another block just to be safe, we don’t know,” he said.

Yetter’s Candy owner Jeff Carr said they just moved into the Millvale business less than a year ago, and are dealing with the damaging flood waters.

“They had water, I do believe, in about 5 feet inside. The store was down for a year while they rebuilt. We are hoping that doesn’t happen again,” he said, while placing sandbags outside the business.
